Chipotle Honey Glazed Pecans

These Chipotle Honey Pecans bring the perfect balance of smoky heat and sweet crunch!
Course: Appetizer

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoon kosher salt or 1 teaspoon table salt
  • 1 teaspoon chipotle powder
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 2 cups pecans whole or halved

Instructions

  • Toast the Pecans: In a dry skillet over medium heat, toast the pecans until fragrant and slightly darker in color. Alternatively, place them on a sheet pan and bake in a 350°F preheated oven for about 10 minutes. This step enhances their natural nuttiness.
  • Prepare the Spice Blend: In a medium-sized bowl, combine the sugar, kosher salt, and chipotle powder. Make sure the bowl is large enough to accommodate the pecans later.
  • Coat the Pecans: In a large nonstick skillet over medium heat, stir together the water, honey, and olive oil until the mixture begins to bubble. Add the toasted pecans and stir until they’re fully coated in the sticky glaze.
  • Toss and Cool: Transfer the glazed pecans into the spice blend, tossing them until evenly coated. Spread the pecans in an even layer onto a sheet pan and let them cool to room temperature for about an hour. This step ensures a crisp, flavorful coating.

Notes

Substitution Options!
  • Swap Pecans for Almonds: If you prefer a crunchier bite, almonds are a fantastic alternative to pecans. Their firm texture pairs beautifully with the sweet and spicy glaze.
  • Walnuts Work Wonders: Walnuts’ slightly bitter undertones perfectly complement the honey and chipotle flavors, adding a unique depth to the recipe.
  • Chili Powder: Chili powder provides a balanced flavor profile and can be a versatile substitute for chipotle powder with a little less heat.
  • Cayenne Pepper: If you're looking for extra heat, cayenne pepper is a great option. Add a pinch or more to suit your spice tolerance.
