Glorious Baked Chocolate Glazed Donuts
I’ve never met a donut I didn’t like! Cake donuts, yeast donuts, filled donuts, glazed donuts, frosted donuts….yeah, they’re all delicious. But until recently, I’ve never tried a baked donut and let me tell you these Baked Chocolate Glazed Donuts are totally addicting!

My son bought me these awesome donut pans for Christmas this year and so I was off, in search of the perfect chocolate baked donut recipe. I tried a few of them that just tasted like a cupcake in the shape of a donut…..not what I was looking for. I found one recipe that tasted great but the texture wasn’t exactly what I wanted….so I began to tweak. And let me tell you….these babies are delicious! You’ll never miss that they are not fried.
First, preheat your oven to 375 degrees. In a medium sized bowl add all of the dry ingredients…flour, sugar, dutch process cocoa powder, espresso powder, mini chocolate chips, baking soda, and salt, and whisk together to thoroughly combine. In a small bowl whisk together the wet ingredients; egg, vanilla, sour cream, milk and vegetable oil. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and stir until well combined.

To help obtain more of a fried texture, spray the silicone baking pans with a little cooking spray. Put each donut pan on a separate cookie sheet to allow for even baking. To make it easier to get the donut batter in the baking pans I filled a gallon size ziploc bag with the batter and cut one corner….now fill those pans! You may end up with a little bit of extra batter. I probably could have made about one more donut. Instead I just sampled the batter. Shhhh…..don’t tell anyone!

Another tip for helping to achieve that fried texture is to spray the top of the batter with a little additional cooking spray once you have it in the pans. This also keeps the dough from rising too fast and makes for a more dense donut. Bake the donuts for 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Test several donuts as you might poke through a chocolate chip and make you think they aren’t done when they are.
While the donuts are baking make your glaze. In a small bowl, combine the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla and whisk until all the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is smooth and creamy. This 4 cup measuring cup is perfect for mixing the glaze and dipping the donuts as they just fit in the base of the cup. You can also prepare your landing station for the donuts after you dunk them in the glaze. I just laid some foil on the counter to catch the drips and set a wire rack on top.

When the donuts are done you’ll have to let them cool in the pan for about 15-20 minutes before releasing them so they won’t break. Now ….take your donuts for a dip! Completely submerge and flip those donuts so they are totally covered in the glaze and lay them to rest on the wire rack.

The most difficult part of this recipe is waiting until the glaze sets up before you dig in! It will take a good 15 minutes or so for the glaze to set up completely. Sooooo delicious! I hope you enjoy them as much as we did!!

how many does this make
Hi Lauren,
It makes about a dozen donuts! Hope you like them!!
Thanks, Diana
You talk about Expresso Powder in your picture directions, but no mention on it in the recipe. Thoughts.
Great catch!! I just use one teaspoon of espresso powder for a batch to enhance the chocolate flavor. I appreciate you bringing it to my attention…I’ll update the recipe now!
